AHA Luxembourg has joined a global civil society initiative to oppose a recent US Executive Order withdrawing the United States from key international organisations, conventions, and treaties. More than 60 organisations worldwide have joined the effort, forming a broad coalition representing hundreds of groups working on human rights, democracy, freedom of thought, equality, and humanitarian action.
The open letter, coordinated by Humanists International, warns that disengagement from multilateral institutions undermines the international human rights system and weakens global cooperation at a time of heightened geopolitical tension. Withdrawing from these mechanisms does not eliminate global challenges. Instead, it reduces opportunities for cooperation, accountability, and collective problem-solving, while creating a vacuum likely to be filled by authoritarian or malign actors.
Signatories also expressed serious concern about rhetoric targeting civil society and international NGOs, noting that such language endangers human rights defenders and erodes the global architecture designed to protect democratic values.
Commenting on the initiative, Gary McLelland, Chief Executive Officer of Humanists International, said:
“Humanists International’s engagement with multilateral institutions goes back to its founding in 1952. Coordinating this letter reflects that long-standing commitment and demonstrates that civil society is united in defending multilateralism, human rights, and international cooperation. Turning away from multilateral institutions makes the world less safe, less fair, and less accountable.”
Humanists International and the other signatories urge the US administration to reverse this decision and re-engage constructively with the international community, reaffirming its commitment to international law, cooperation, and shared global responsibility.

Globale Zivilgesellschaft gegen den Rückzug der USA aus multilateralen Institutionen
AHA Luxemburg hat sich einer globalen Initiative der Zivilgesellschaft angeschlossen, die sich gegen eine kürzlich erlassene Verordnung der US-Regierung richtet. Mit dieser Verordnung treten die Vereinigten Staaten aus wichtigen internationalen Organisationen, Konventionen und Verträgen aus. Mehr als 60 zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen, die sich für Menschenrechte, Demokratie, Gedankenfreiheit, Gleichberechtigung und humanitäre Hilfe einsetzen, lehnen diesen Rückzug ab.
Der von Humanists International koordinierte offene Brief warnt davor, dass der Rückzug aus multilateralen Institutionen das internationale Menschenrechtssystem untergräbt und die globale Zusammenarbeit in einer Zeit erhöhter geopolitischer Spannungen schwächt. Der Rückzug aus diesen Mechanismen beseitigt globale Herausforderungen nicht. Vielmehr verringert er die Möglichkeiten für Zusammenarbeit, eine Rechenschaftspflicht und kollektive Problemlösung und schafft gleichzeitig ein Vakuum, das wahrscheinlich von autoritären oder böswilligen Akteuren gefüllt wird.
Die Unterzeichnenden äußern zudem ernsthafte Besorgnis über eine Rhetorik, die sich gegen die Zivilgesellschaft und internationale Nichtregierungsorganisationen richtet. Sie weisen darauf hin, dass solche Äußerungen Menschenrechtsverteidiger*innen gefährden und die globale Architektur zum Schutz demokratischer Werte untergraben.
Die Unterzeichnenden fordern die US-Regierung nachdrücklich auf, diese Entscheidung rückgängig zu machen und sich wieder konstruktiv in die internationale Gemeinschaft einzubringen, indem sie ihr Bekenntnis zum Völkerrecht, zur internationalen Zusammenarbeit und zur gemeinsamen globalen Verantwortung bekräftigt.
